As far as musical interests go, I’d have to say that the majority of my influence right now comes from the Idol shows. It started with Kelly Clarkson and her amazingly talented set of pipes. She has broken away from the Idol franchise to make a wonderful name for herself. The nomination and eventual celebration of her Grammy win has shown that even though her beginning was with Idol, that she has enough of the it factor to make it on her own steam.
Kalan Porter was the Canadian Idol winner for the second season. This young man has enough talent to sink a cruise ship. If his life depended on it, his set of pipes could save a nation. I am certain that he will be a big hit once his second album is released. Sony/BMG has certainly found their gold ticket with his talent.
Kalans manager Jim Campbell is one of the most influential entertainment managers in Canada. He has managed talent that has gone far and wide, The Barenaked Ladies for one. We can rest assured that as long as Jim is backing this young man, that his talent will not be taken for granted. His fame has already been compared to the likes of Beatle Mania and gained him the respect of many seasoned artists.
Melissa ONeil is the current Canadian Idol. This talented 3rd season winner has a set of pipes on her that are angelic. Her honest personality and caring for her own image have shown that she is a supreme role model for not only the young, but old alike. She has shown young girls that no matter what you look like, or what you do in life, as long as you make it your own, you are a winner. She may not have had the record sales of other Idols, but her message is there. She has a loyal fan base and just happens to share an amazing manager, Jim Campbell. This young lady will go far if giving the chance to prove herself. She only needs a second album to be able to achieve this. To step away from the idol prepared album and create her own sound, her own voice. We have already witnessed her writing abilities with Some place to hide.
Clay Aiken, second season runner up for American Idol. We watched his transformation from skinny little redhead with glasses, to the amazingly talented young man that he is. With a voice as powerful as Luther Vandros, and a stage presence like weve only managed to see with the greatest artists of all time, he has certainly proven that he has his own spot in musical history.
As Clay winds his way to his next cd release, we find that he has put on a bit of weight and changed his hair. The weight looks good; the jury is still out on the hair. But those pipes of his will bring everyone back to his artistic feet to purchase his next cd. His fans have remained loyal from his first appearance on national television. He will stand the test of entertainments time.
Many other idols have come and gone, but one I will never forget is Canadian Idol runner up, Billy Klippert. He still stays true to himself and his music. He has gained a very loyal fan base, and his musical stylings have proven to fit who he is in the rock world. He is loyal to his fans, as well as kind and compassionate. He deserves to remain in the industry as a leader. His next cd is due to come out later this year.
So, for those who believe that the Idol franchise is simply a glorified Karaoke contest, Id like to see them attempt the impossible against so many thousands of hopefuls as well as industry buffs. For the Idols Ive mentioned, as well as those I havent they have gone through the hardest competition that they could in order to become a recorded artist. So many industry artists who have been established for years have mentioned that there is nothing more stressful than to compete in one of the Idol competitions. Several have also mentioned that they would never make it through. One of the artists to mention this is the mega star, Celine Dion.
For the mega stars to bow their talents to those competing, is a big step. It shows that there is respect among the artists, even if the industry is severely biased towards the winners. In this day and age of artistic talent, too many are being passed up in exchange for the studio made pop bands that all sound the same. Its time to get back to what is real in the industry. Its time to get back to true talent. Not just a singer who needs 3 or 4 others to sing with them in order to be able to hold a key.
Its time for Americans and Canadians alike to demand that the quality of talent be returned to what it was 15 years ago. True talent never dies. Cookie cutter bands do.
