That much can also be said for Brandon Jones, who placed eighth on the show despite being repeatedly run through the ringer by the members of the judging panel. He just signed a two-record deal with Toronto-based Sound of Pop Records, and had his first songwriting session this past weekend.
"I was hoping it would happen all along, but after a few months I started to lose hope," Brandon told Eye on Idol on Friday. "All of the other competitors seemed like they were recording and I had a bit of jealousy going on."
That won't be the case anymore, as Jones becomes one of the first of the recent cohort to secure a recording contract. He will now be spending a week per month in Toronto working on the record until he finishes the school year, after which he plans to settle in more permanently.
"I've missed Toronto so much," said the Qusipamsis, NB teen. "I'd never really been to a big city before this summer. It's nice to be able to move there with something already set up for me to do. It's going to be awesome."
JC Smith, co-director of Jones' label (which has also been working with Top 22 Idol Chris Labelle), said he can't wait to see just how big his latest find becomes.
"He's really got that 'it' factor," Smith told Eye on Idol. "He didn't shy away from being a pop star - he seemed to embrace that. It takes some courage for a guy to do straight-up pop... He's got sort of an urban vibe even though he's a pop white kid... He is just the type of personality we were looking for."
Smith said the public can expect a single out later this month and the first album near the beginning of May. He says he's planning a tour for the summer and plenty of Brandon Jones merchandise.
As far as Brandon's mom Holly is concerned, it all still seems like a bit of a fairy tale.
"We were trying to figure out what to do and had offers from all over the place but I didn't want to send my 17-year-old to L.A.," she said. "When this came up, I was freaking. I feel sick to my stomach I'm so proud."
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! ;D
